Information on the Differences Between Screen Printed and Digital Printed T-shirts

The Screen Process

The process of screen printing is achieved by layering colours.

The flag with TEXAS written below at the left, would be printed using three screens. One blue, one red and one black for the word Texas and the outline.

Once the screens are made the printing cost is very inexpensive, due to the fact that the only media used is ink (no transfer paper or any other supplies are required). The screens can be used over and over. This explains why large runs are so cost effective. The expensive part of the operation is doing the colour separations and making the screens.

After each layer is printed, the ink is allowed to dry (fast drying inks are used). The quality screen printers use quality inks that will not peel or crack.

For large print runs that don't require lots of colours or full colour, this may be your best option.

Strengths:

Screen Printing is very cost effective for printing large quantities with 1 to 5 colours. Major screen printing companies can print even more than 5 colours, however you will want to be printing very large quantities to bring your per unit price into an acceptable range.

Screen printed shirts can be printed on any colour T-shirt. One final strength is that they have white ink that prints white on any colour.

Drawbacks:

Because of the initial costs of setup, the actual per-unit cost of screened T-shirts could simply be too expensive for small runs. Each screen requires a separate application so the more screens the more often the screens have to be setup. Also, if you want or need several colours or full-colour, that process is not readily available and where it is, it is expensive to set up.
